More Vacancies on Natland Parish Council

Do you want a bigger say in how your Community is served?  Then why not step forward and be a parish councillor?
There are now three vacancies on Natland Parish Council following the election of only four councillors on 3 May 2018, John Houghton’s co-option by the Council on 29 May and John Fisher’s recent resignation.  The Council can fill these casual vacancies by co-option.
The co-options would be until May 2022, when the next full election of the Council will be held.
This is a particularly dangerous time for Natland to be short of councillors.  Kendal Town Council has asked the District Council (SLDC) to extend Kendal’s boundary into Natland, annexing The Beeches and the intervening properties along Natland Mill Beck Lane.  There will be consultations about the proposal in March 2019 leading to a final decision by SLDC in July.  That decision should rest on which council is better able to serve and represent its residents.  Natland’s chronic vacancies weaken its case in comparison with Kendal where every seat is contested by party political candidates.
Anyone who is interested in taking on this valuable public service should contact the Clerk or the Chair or any Councillor – contact details are on the notice board or Natland’s blogsite.  Or just come and observe the next Council meeting (dates on the notice board).
There’s plenty of information about what parish councils do on the websites of the National Association of Local Councils and the Cumbria Association of Local Councils – just google NALC or CALC Cumbria and explore.

Report of the W I Meeting in December

Natland and Oxenholme W I Meeting
12 December 2018
President Marion Want welcomed 41 members to the Christmas meeting.

6 members had recently attended the Carol Service at Kendal Parish Church and others a production at Kendal Town Hall by Kendal College Students, both events were very enjoyable.

A Christmas Miscellany – featuring entertainment, poetry readings and games provided by members.  An alternative production of the pantomime Cinderella by ‘Natland and Oxenholme W.I. Totally Amazing Ladies Live on Stage was amusing and much enjoyed by all.

A supper of mince pies, shortbread, stollen and mulled wine was then provided and served by the committee.

President Marion gave thanks to Joan Ratcliffe, Kirsten Cannon and Jean Heseltine for the planning of the evening and to all those who had taken part and wished everyone present a very Happy Christmas.

The competition for a wrapped Christmas present for a resident of Riverside was won by Elaine Close with Marcell Tatham second.

The raffle for the table flowers provided by Diana Dickinson was won by Kirsten Cannon.

Date of next meeting is Wednesday 16 January at 7.30pm (please note new time) in Natland Village Hall when the speaker will be Trevor Hughes on ‘The Yards of Kendal’.

Pro Nobis Singers - Christmas Concert.

The Pro Nobis annual Christmas concert is on Sunday 16 December in St Mark's at
7.30 when the choir will be joined by organist, Ian Pattinson for a programme
of seasonal music and readings. Entitled 'Welcome Sir Christèmas', the main
work in the first half of the programme is William Mathias' tuneful Carol
Sequence 'Ave Rex' which concludes with a jaunty setting of the anonymous carol
'Sir Christèmas'. Other works in the first half of the programme include music
by the 17th-century German composer Heinrich Schütz: his German Magnificat and
a setting of 'Hodie Christus natus est' (Today Christ was born).
In the second half of the concert this year, we are including quite few pieces
which focus on the countryside in Winter, as well as the Christmas story itself
of course. Thus, we have the 20th-century French composer Francis Poulenc's
'Night of snow', Toby Young's little piece 'The Owl' and my own setting of
Carol Ann Duffy's poem entitled 'The Bee Carol'. Ian Pattinson will contribute
an organ solo: Bach's joyful re-working of the well-known carol 'In dulci
jubilo'. If you are a fan of King's College Nine Lessons and Carols, this is
the organ voluntary played after the service every year. We conclude the
concert with folk songs from Germany, the Ukraine and Romania and, finally
after a humorous reading, two Wassail carols. Do come and join us if you can.
As usual wine/fruit juice and mince pies will be available after the concert.
Programmes can be purchased in advance from Northern Light Stained Glass,
Blackhall Yard, Kendal or from me (Tel: 01539 723482).

The Fallen Remembered by John Chandler

At the end of the First World War, the Great War as it was then called, various ways of acknowledging the huge sacrifice made by so many of our service personnel were inaugurated.   For the most part these took the form of a Cross in a prominent place in towns and villages, often a churchyard as in Natland.  The names of all those who made the supreme sacrifice were eligible to be included on their local War Memorial.
The Memorial Cross plus plaques.
However, this was sometimes where the problems began. Did the hero, who most probably lay in a corner of a  foreign field, have his name (it usually was he) engraved on the memorial where he was born, where he grew up, where he enlisted, where his family now lived or where a local committee agreed it could appear?
This could mean that the fallen did not have their name recorded anywhere, if the local committee did not agree, or the family had moved on.  Or sometimes the opposite could be the case that the name was recorded more than once, the record is believed to be seventeen appearances on different war memorials.
The Original Plaque

The names on the original War Memorial of St. Mark’s Church were of six local men:
Alexander Cragghill, Thomas Elleray, John Gilbert Fallowfield, James Francis Inman, John Edward Inman, George Ernest Howard Keesey.
Follow this link to find out more about them.

The New Plaque
However, there are eleven other names associated with St. Mark's Church, Natland and Oxenholme who have been added by the addition of a new plaque: Reuben Blakeman, George Davies, John Hudson, Henry Keenan, Michael McGrath, Herbert Nixon, Frederick James Paget, James William Rooksby, Charles Reginald Spratt, Lewis Edward Watson, Thomas Young.  Follow this link to find out more about them.
With the exception of Herbert Nixon and Michael McGrath the names listed were, during the pre-war period,  "inmates" (that is what they were called) at the Institution St. Mark's Home for Waifs and Strays.
Gathering information on any of them has not been easy as tracing their backgrounds has been difficult.  Keenan, McGrath and Paget are all known or believed to be on Memorials elsewhere.  Nixon and Spratt are not believed to be on any Memorial.  It is not known if Blakeman, Davies, Hudson, Rooksby, Watson and Young have their names on any memorial other than Natland.  Some "inmates" were sent to Canada and consequently were "inmates" at a sister home in Canada.  Many will have joined the Canadian Forces.

More details of each of the above can be found in a red book at the rear of Church along with details of many who survived.

Greta's Tale of her experiences as a wartime evacuee

This recollection has been available for a while via the Features tab, above, but it might be of interest to people now living near Natland Mill Beck Lane. Harvest bug mites about

The little blighters are back. Don't go into the garden without a liberal application of insect repellent.  You won't see them and you won't feel them until too late. Then the itchy little red lumps will stay with you for weeks. For anyone new to Natland, this is the mark of the true Natlander.

Doorstep Cold Caller Warning

Cumbria Trading Standards and United Utilities are warning residents in Cumbria to be on their guard from cold callers claiming to want to talk about poor water pressure. Bogus callers take advantage of others due to the increased communication there’s been around saving water during this hot dry weather.

United Utilities staff members always carry photo identification cards. Customers can also check anyone claiming to be from United Utilities by calling 0345 6723 723.

Cumbria Trading Standards advise consumers to be extremely cautious when approached by any doorstep callers offering services or conduct work on their property. These types of callers often use persuasive or aggressive tactics to get people to agree to have work carried out and then charge far more than was quoted for poor quality work or goods.

They often fail to provide a legally required cancellation notice which enables the householder to cancel the work in certain circumstances.

Trading Standards advice is to always say ‘NO’ to any cold callers and we ask that you look out for elderly or vulnerable family, friends and neighbours.

If you have been cold called or wish to report an incident please contact us via the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 03454 04 05 06 or visit www.adviceguide.org.uk or alternatively contact Cumbria Police on 101.

Report of June's W.I. Meeting.

President Marion Want welcomed 31 members to the meeting.  She thanked Stella Ruth Hunter for providing the flowers.

Elaine Close had recently attended the National Federation Women’s Institute AGM in Cardiff and she gave a report on the meeting which had included guest speakers Dame Stella Rimington, Former Director of MI5 and Huw Edwards BBC News Presenter.

President Marion then welcomed Debra Jessett a humanist Celebrant from the British Humanist Association.  Debra gave an interesting illustrated presentation on her role providing personalised non-religious ceremonies to recognise and celebrate life’s milestones.  These included weddings, naming ceremonies, vow renewal, civil partnership and funerals.  Debra said individuals and family members were able to design their own very personal ceremonies.  President Marion Want gave the vote of thanks.

The competition for an old family photo was won by Dorothy Goddard with Jean Dobson second.  The monthly raffle was won by Nancy Toft.

Date of next meeting is Wednesday 18 July at 7.15pm in Natland Village Hall when the speaker will be Archie Workman on ‘My Life in the Gutter’.

Natland Parish Council. Minutes of the June Meeting

Follow this link to find out about the matters discussed by the Parish Council. Our Police Officer, PC Marion Jeffery, was unable to attend but sent a report. There were also updates to the budget and the cash statement.

Roof scammer alert

There are doubts as to the legitimacy of someone who is advertising roofing services in the July edition of Local Choice.  Uninvited, he called on a village resident who was not aware there was a problem with the roof. After showing a photograph purportedly of the roof defect, he then removed slates from  the roof for no apparent reason. The police were alerted, and he hasn't been seen since. However the advert may attract more customers who are not aware of this background. The phone number given in the advert appears to be a local number but he is not from this area. So be careful before engaging roofers at the moment!

If you think you have problem with the roof, ask a neighbour for a second opinion. If you need to take it further ask one of your many neighbours in the village who has had roof work done for a recommendation.

Stop press - Long Meadow public inquiry

At 4.40pm, Wednesday, Oakmere Homes formally withdrew their Appeal and the Inspector closed the Inquiry.

After only the second day of a seven-day programme, landscape/green gap and drainage/flooding matters had been considered, but highways, heritage, housing supply, 'tidying up' and formal site visit were still to come.  But landscape and flooding were creating so many interdependent issues that Oakmere's QC sought further instructions from his client whom he contacted at a racecourse somewhere and got his decision.

Just before that Long Meadow Lane residents had expressed their feelings about flooding from the site and Clive Walkley had made his statement about being a pedestrian on Oxenholme Lane.  The County Council's man from Carlisle had waited all day for nothing.

But now we don't have to turn out tomorrow at the Shakespeare Centre or back in the Town Hall after that.  Hooray!

We shall see whether Oakmere want to do a lot of extra investigation and design work and relaunch their appeal for a (probably) less financially viable site.

Garden Open Day Sunday 22nd July

Two years ago on a lovely sunny Sunday substantial funds were raised for the Church and for the Village Hall. With a fine sunny day forecast again we hope to improve on the attendance and on the income for both organisations.

We have gardens in the village centre, Oxenholme Lane, Longmeadow, at Cracalt, Fell Close as well as one special garden near Oxenholme station. The gardens will be open from 11.30am until 5.00pm. Programmes will be on sale later this month in advance at £4.00 from Natland and Oxenholme Post Offices Admission from one week before and on the day will be £5.00 at the Church door or at the more remote participating gardens.

Refreshments will be available in the village hall with proceeds from refreshments going to the village hall. If you can bake a cake for teas please contact Rhian Peters or anyone on the village hall committee.

We would also like to recruit one or two more garden owners to open their gardens. We are not looking for “show gardens “and they do not have to be large or free of all weeds. This is an opportunity to share your garden with other gardeners who are visiting to enjoy a stroll round the village on a Sunny Sunday afternoon

If you would like to chat about opening your garden please call or text Collin on 07740 447858.

We also need help publicising the event so please tell your family, friends, put it on face book, tweet about it, and let everyone know who you think would enjoy an afternoon out in some wonderful gardens.

Monday Club Meeting

The last Club  meeting before the summer break will be on 18th June when members will meet at the Netherwood Hotel at 12 noon for 12.30pm when lunch will be served.
The 2018-2019 season will begin on Monday 17th September and a warm welcome is given to new members from Natland.

Documents are being published almost daily on SLDC’s website – click here, then view Plans and Documents. Of particular relevance is the recent Appellant’s Proof of Evidence – 44 pages written by consultant Kate Bellwood.  The Planning Inspectorate’s own website is rubbish.
As an overworked SLDC planning officer said to me two days ago – “They’re going to throw the book at us”.
Natland Parish Council is not formally involved in the Inquiry, but councillors will be attending the Inquiry when appropriate and available.

Thank you to everybody who gave so generously in Christian Aid Week.

We raised £2,278 by collecting house-to-house and by holding a Coffee Morning in church. This is a fantastic amount and is a tribute to the generosity of the people of Natland, Oxenholme,The Oaks and Strawberry Fields and The Beeches. The money will be used for helping the poorest people of the world out of misery via Christian Aid projects. Thank you very much.

W.I. Meeting Report for May

President Marion Want welcomed 30 members to the meeting.  She thanked Marcell Tatham for the table flowers and the members of the committee for dressing in period costume to mark the centenary of women’s suffrage. President Marion then welcomed Doris Aldworth who spoke about the formation of the WI and the history of resolutions and campaigns the WI had passed over the last 100 years.  Committee member Jean Heseltine then introduced an interesting quiz on various WI resolutions over the years and members had to guess which decade they had been voted on.  This provided some lively discussion.  Thanks were expressed to Doris and Jean for their help. A buffet supper was provided by members of the committee. The competition for a Gingerbread Person was won by Jean Heseltine with Hilary Atkinson second.  The monthly raffle was won by Anne Bonney. Date of next meeting is Wednesday 20 June at 7.15pm in Natland Village Hall when the speaker will be Debra Jessett on Hatches, Matches and Despatches.

It's Christian Aid Week

There will be a big red envelope through your door shortly and your usual collector will be knocking on the door a few days later to collect it, hopefully full of money. The people of Natland have always been very generous in donating to Christian Aid and the money has been spent to lift the very poorest in developing countries out of poverty. People like Vilia in Haiti in the picture who lost her mother and her home in the earthquake of 2010 and was re-housed into a more solid structure with the help of Christian Aid. This house survived the hurricane in 2016. With your help more houses could be built..... Please give generously.   Elspeth Jayne.

Natland Parish Council Annual Meeting

Parish Council Chair David Peters welcomed a good turnout of parishioners to the village hall last evening and introduced one of our newly elected District Councillors, Chris Hogg who made thoughtful contributions to later discussions in the meeting. He also pointed out the need for new candidates to fill the vacancies on the Council.

The Council’s Annual report and accounts were received unanimously. There were many reports from other parish organisations. One highlight amongst many good reports was a heart warming story of the work done at Appletree school of the way in which young damaged lives were being turned round by the skilled work of its staff and the co-operation of many in the village, particularly St Mark’s  school staff and pupils working on joint projects and lessons. Some of these reports will be published on this website in coming weeks.

Following lively debate, there was very little support for the Parish Council’s proposed Cold Calling Zone.

Lively debate being the keynote of the evening, Guy Weller’s proposition that the Parish Council drop the idea of a combined cycle/footway along Natland Road was amended to dropping the cycleway element leaving the Parish Council still to pursue the idea of a footpath. The problem envisaged with the cycleway was that it would be built to such a high standard that all the verges would disappear under tarmac changing the road from a country lane into an urban roadway. It was pointed out that a footway would be much lower down the County Council’s priorities than a joint use path and so funding might never come for a footpath. At  the end of a long debate, the amended motion of path only was carried.

Guy Weller’s second motion requesting a 40 mph speed limit on Natland Road between the village and the town was much less controversial and was passed without opposition.
These three items of business will now pass back to the Parish Council for more thought.

Parish Council - Minutes of April Meeting

These are the minutes of the monthly meeting and include a reference to the new houses on the side of Helm near Castlesteads. These are called Rochester Gardens now and SLDC Electoral Services had confirmed that numbers 1 to 7 Rochester Gardens are in Kendal Town and numbers 9 to 17 are in Natland parish.  Number 8 is apparently split by the boundary and not yet determined which parish it will be in.
A warm welcome is extended to you from Natland News Website, whichever side of the boundary you are on!
