An Invitation from Friends of the Lake District

Join us for a Family Fun Day on the Helm. Build and decorate your very own Hedgehog homes and Bee Hotels, take part in our treasure hunt or bring a picnic and just enjoy the view.

No Booking is required for any of the day's activities, just head for the Helm and see what's afoot... You can come and collect a treasure map anytime from 11am until 2pm. We will be 'manning the Helm' and giving out prizes until 3pm. *All children must be accompanied by an adult*

Build and decorate Hedgehog homes and Bee Hotels – whilst learning about why their populations are struggling and what you can do to help. All materials will be provided and you can take them home to place in your gardens.

We'll be running two Hedgehog Homes and Bee Hotel making sessions:

11:00 until 12:00 & 13:00 until 14:00 (Please note these are drop in sessions so just come and find us on the day, we'll be easy to spot on the Helm)

We'll also be providing a treasure hunt to get you all exploring, with a prize for those eagle eyed people who manage to find everything on our treasure map!

Why not bring a picnic, meet the Fell Ponies and enjoy the wonderful view that the Helm offers.

The Helm is situated near Oxenholme, just south east of Kendal and although not a very high hill at 185m, it gives beautiful views. Since 2007, we have installed gates improving access on the Helm for all to enjoy. We have also introduced a rare breed of Fell Pony, native to Cumbria. The ponies help with conservation through their grazing as well as creating open ground in their hoof marks so that flower seeds can germinate. Our volunteers are maintaining the dry stone walls that are a part of its character as well as being important to keep the Fell ponies and cows in. We have planted over 1,500 trees, including oak, rowan, birch, wild cherry and hawthorn to create a new wood for people and wildlife to visit all year round.
