Lois Sparling, our new Parish Councillor, writes: Did you know that there'll be a pack of cyclists racing twice round through Natland on Sunday morning between 9 and 11 or so, and then runners after them?

BANGS

The Natland News posting on 9th April re the mystery BANGS has caused a flood of comments, the most for any posting since we started publishing just over 12 months ago. David Peters (Chair Natland Parish Council) has had contact with SLDC and they are looking into it.
The Westmorland Gazette has been in touch with Natland News team for updates on the mystery. Has anyone got any more information?

Fire Safety Visits

I work at Kendal fire station as a Crew Manager on Amber watch, a large part of our work includes fire safety visits to domestic properties during which we offer fire safety advice and fitting of free smoke alarms if required.
We are also keen to attend any community events to promote fire safety (bringing the fire engine if required!) and would be happy to attend any meetings, coffee mornings etc to spread the word.

Celebrating Weddings

St. Marks Church Natland and Oxenholme requests  the pleasure of
Everyone, especially those who were married at St Mark’s Church, to a

 “Celebration of Marriage”
on Sunday 22nd April 2012 at 3pm. 

It is to be held in St Mark’s Church, and will be followed by Afternoon Tea in the Vestry.
There will be an opportunity to view the Wedding Exhibition.
The Exhibition will also be open on the afternoons of Monday 23rd,
Tuesday 24th and Wednesday 25th April from 1.30-5pm.
A service of Holy Communion for St Mark’s Day will take place on Wednesday 25th at 7.30pm.

There are 3 light engine movements listed, at your own risk and time.

Sat April 21st northbound through Oxenholme a double header 46115 Scots Guardsman and 45305, about 9-58 am.

Sunday 22nd April 70013 Oliver Cromwell southbound through Oxenhome 15-53.

The train listed for the 26th of April will now run down the Settle and Carlisle railway.

Monday Club Meeting

On the 16th April Joe Human M.B.E., the Fairtrade campaigner from Keswick, will talk about his work when he asks  "How do you take your Coffee?" 2.00 at the Village Hall.

Annual Church Meeting

St. Mark's Church invites everyone to their annual review of the work of the church which will, for the first time, be part of the Morning Service. It's on Sunday next, the 15th April and should provide an ideal opportunity to find out what goes on in church. Click on PCC to find the Parochial Church Council's report for last year.

Wedding pictures wanted.

 St. Mark's Church is holding a  Wedding Celebration Service on Sunday the 22nd April at 3pm, to which everyone is welcome. There is an afternoon tea including wedding cake afterwards. An exhibition is also going to be opened in the church on that day and it will be open until Wednesday 25th April in the afternoons, 1.30-5.00. If you have any photos or wedding memorabilia which you would like to be included in the exhibition please contact John Chandler.

Just wanted to say that I am new here in Natland, I'm living at the Beattie's cottage at the bottom of Oxenholme Lane and I only moved in a few weeks ago. I would like to say thank you to all the people who have either waved at me or said hello in passing or dropped in and made me feel so welcome.

Even More Scams

Trading Standards are warning consumers that the people behind the unsolicited telephone calls, stating you have a virus on their computer, appear to have changed their strategy.  

The caller will offer 'free security checks' or tell you that a virus has been detected on your computer.

The caller will then give instructions which will allow remote access of your machine or in some cases they will ask for credit card information to pay for the service.

The latest information is that they are now stating to be from BT, whereas previously they indicated they were from Microsoft.  The advice remains the same; if you receive such a call to hang up.

More Scams - Not All Thieves Are Stupid!

GPS
A couple of weeks ago a friend told me that someone she knew had their car broken into while they were at a football game. Their car was parked on the green which was adjacent to the football stadium and specially allotted to football fans. Things stolen from the car included a garage door remote control, some money and a GPS which had been prominently mounted on the dashboard.

When the victims got home, they found that their house had been ransacked and just about everything worth anything had been stolen. The thieves had used the GPS to guide them to the house. They then used the garage remote control to open the garage door and gain entry to the house. The thieves knew the owners were at the football game, they knew what time the game was scheduled to finish and so they knew how much time they had to clean out the house. It would appear that they had brought a truck to empty the house of its contents.

Something to consider if you have a GPS - don't put your home address in it.. Put a nearby address (like a store or gas station) so you can still find your way home if you need to, but no one else would know where you live if your GPS were stolen.

MOBILE PHONES

I never thought of this.......

This lady has now changed her habit of how she lists her names on her mobile phone after her handbag was stolen. Her handbag, which contained her mobile phone, credit card, wallet... etc...was stolen.

20 minutes later when she called her hubby, from a pay phone telling him what had happened, hubby says 'I received your text asking about our Pin number and I've replied a little while ago.' When they rushed down to the bank, the bank staff told them all the money was already withdrawn. The thief had actually used the stolen cell phone to text 'hubby' in the contact list and got hold of the pin number. Within 20 minutes he had withdrawn all the money from their bank account.

Moral of the lesson:

Do not disclose the relationship between you and the people in your contact list.
Avoid using names like Home, Honey, Hubby, Sweetheart, Dad, Mum, etc....
And very importantly, when sensitive info is being asked through texts, CONFIRM by calling back.

Also, when you're being texted by friends or family to meet them somewhere, be sure to call back to confirm that the message came from them. If you don't reach them, be very careful about going places to meet 'family and friends' who text you..

Natland Parish Council Nominations

Please see below the nominations for the seven vacancies on Natland Parish Council.  Provided none of them withdraws by the deadline of noon on Wednesday 11 April, this means Natland will have a fully-elected Council with no vacancies requiring co-option and no need for a poll on 3 May (despite SLDC having already sent out poll cards!).

Steam Trains - Update

The steam train for Thursday the 12th of April will now be 34067 Tangmere. The next steam train will be on Thursday  26th April.

Crow Scarers

Does anyone have solid information about who is responsible for the loud bangs that occur every day, starting around 7.30 am and continuing until late afternoon? I suppose that they are crow scarers, but the level of noise produced is unnecessary and unacceptable. Many walkers on Helm have complained that their dogs are terrified by the bangs (even thought they seen to emanate from a location nearer to Sizergh, some 2 miles away), and yesterday (Easter Sunday), while walking near Hawes Bridge, my dog was so frightened by such an 'explosion' she bolted, and a friend riding her horse was nearly unseated when it too panicked. It is as bad as having Bonfire Night every day!

(Some time ago, it was suggested that the farmer at Low Sizergh was using crow scarers to rid his cattle sheds of birds that were annoying his beasts. If this is so, perhaps he might be persuaded to hang unwanted CDs and DVDs from the rafters instead - it certainly works in my friends' vegetable garden!)

This noise pollution must be stopped. Any suggestions?

Next steam train

For those of who gave up and went home, Oliver Cromwell was over an hour late,  Sat 31st.

The next steam train will be on Thursday the 12th April,  46115 Scots Guardsman, northbound through Oxenholme around 11-41am.
