Telesales Campaign

This is a message from Cumbria Neighbourhood Watch Information sent on behalf of Cumbria County Council:

Cumbria Police and Cumbria Trading Standards have been alerted to a telesales campaign by a security company called Direct Response based in Sutton Coldfield.  These are a bona fide security company, Inspectorate Approved (SSAIB) and meet Police policy standards.  However, Cumbria Police and Cumbria Trading Standards do not have any active involvement in this telesales campaign, which is a legitimate commercial venture, but not endorsed by our organisations.

Trading Standards would always advise that before agreeing to have work carried out or agreeing to buy something following an unsolicited call, that you have considered seeking further information about the supplier and getting additional quotes from other suppliers.

To reduce the number of unsolicited telephone calls you receive you can register with the Telephone Preference Service which restricts the supply of your telephone number to organisations who may ring you with offers and information you do not wish to receive.  To register for free, visit www.tpsonline.org.uk or telephone 08450 700707.

If you would like further advice contact Trading Standards via the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 08454 040506 or contact Cumbria Police on 101

I had a call from these Direct Response people yesterday, trying to ask me information about our house and who owned it. I responded by asking who Direct Response were and the phone was immediately put down.

The fact that we are registered with the TPS seems to make no difference to such organisations who often pretend it to be a market research call rather than a sales call. Ho Hum!

I find it more satisfying to play them some loud relevant music like Bob Dylan "There must be someway out of here....." or The Flying Pickets' cappella version of the Stone's classic "Hello, Who's there on the line? Hi, Hello! How are you? Well I think I'm doing fine...........". Meanwhile I leave them to it and go and have a cup of tea.
