Les Foden at the August WI meeting

President Marion Thornton welcomed members and visitors to the August meeting of Natland and Oxenholme WI and introduced speaker, Les Foden – a broadcaster, national flower judge and writer for the national press – who gave us invaluable tips on gardening, and his innovative ways of controlling pests. He illustrated with slides some of his methods for re-potting and pruning, and the beautiful results of his work. His audience had many questions to ask. Our thanks were expressed by Dawn Ridgeway. The competition for a single bloom was won by Margaret Lancaster, with Jean Clement in second place.
During the July summer break members had enjoyed an evening visit to Holehird and a meal out, and a trip to Hawes.
Ruth Hunter reported that the Burneside brass band concert in Kendal Parish church to commemorate the centenary of World War I had been excellent.
Marion Want reported a well-attended and interesting meeting at Selside about the building of the Thirlmere Viaduct.
At the next meeting Chris Bibby will talk about ‘Bibbys Past and Present’ on Wednesday 17 September at 7.30pm in the Village Hall, Natland. Visitors always welcome.   Margaret Lancaster.
