Change in Post Collection Times

Paula Bradley writes:   Just wanted to let as many Natland residents as possible know about the change in collection times at the post box on the green. Our postman informed me there is no longer an afternoon collection. The only collection of the day is now 11.30am! Preston are apparently in charge of altering the information on the box, which may take time.

Eco Award for Church

On Sunday St. Mark’s church celebrated achieving the bronze Eco church award and we are on our way to silver. In March we started the process of becoming an Eco church. We focused on the five key areas of church life promoted by the scheme: worship and teaching, management of church buildings, management of church land, community & global engagement and lifestyle. We had already, as a church, taken steps to reduce our carbon footprint and met many of the criteria for the award.

To achieve our silver award we will need to raise the profile of our support for sustainability projects both globally and locally, to re-examine our commitment to Fair Trade and to be encouraging church members to reflect on how their lifestyle can be made compatible with caring for God’s creation. We have recently started the process of bringing more wild flowers to the churchyard.  David Walker

Road Salt should be in Containers

The roadside banks above the railway bridge in Helm Lane are wonderful for wild flowers, so what does the council (presumably Cumbria) do? They dump a pile of winter road salt at the top of the hill, straight on the bank, without any container. This is at the spot where the bluebells are at their best in spring. They’ve done the same on the beautiful lane behind Helm, another superb place for flowers. In sensitive areas (in fact everywhere) the road salt should be in containers.      John Inglesfield

Break in at Church

You may have heard that there have been a few break ins to houses in Natland over the last few months. According to the police, the thieves are mainly looking for money and jewellery and they’ve generally ignored other valuable items.

Unfortunately, we suffered a break in at church on 17th November. The kitchen door was forced open but thankfully very little was taken. We have no jewellery at church of course, and very little money is kept on the premises. The perpetrators stole a small amount of money from the small wall safe at the back of church (about £10 was taken).

This will not affect  our policy of keeping our church doors open for everyone (generally 9.00am to 5.00pm every day) but we just want to make people aware, so everyone can be a little more vigilant and careful, knowing that this has happened.

Churchwardens, St. Mark’s Church.

Additional advice from the Chairman of the Parish Council.

The MO is to approach from the back of a property and break in through a window or a conservatory. Cash  and jewellery are their objectives. Apparently spotters on foot or slow cruising cars are known to case joints during the day so we should all challenge anyone we do not know or who looks suspicious. I have done this several times. People with camper vans should be particularly careful. If the Crims notice a gap in the drive, they could surmise that the household is away! Everyone should review their security measures, especially at the rear of their properties.

A Post Office for Natland?

Oxenholme Station has just acquired Post Office services and at the same time it has been noticed that Natland is sadly deprived of any. Moves are afoot to secure a similar outreach PO in Natland and the village hall has already agreed to provide the premises. The challenge for Natland is now to persuade PO Ltd. that there is a need, and enlist the support of others in this cause. Tim Farron is already on board.

A Point Of View on the Home Field development.

I hope that the planners are proud of themselves now that the Home Field is being ripped apart. This beautiful field –  bought in 1885 with the pennies of children of Carlisle diocese as a playing field for the boys’ home – is being destroyed in the name of ‘development’. In selling the field the Children’s Society shares responsibility for this vandalism. John Inglesfield, Natland

Covid Booster coming to Natland

A Vaccination Team will be coming to Natland Village Hall on the 27th September, 10am until 4pm, to deliver autumn boosters.

Barbara Alton writes:

I am part of the vaccination team, recently based at the Westmorland Shopping Centre which has now closed.  We have formed an outreach team and are planning to deliver vaccines to the elderly and vulnerable populations in our local villages.

Below is the eligibility criteria for the vaccine and its likely it will be staggered in age and health issue, so if we need to return to your hall that is a possibility.

Vaccination Team Mobile 07526 972 306 (Mon - Fri)

Who is being offered an autumn booster?

COVID-19 is more serious in older people and in people with certain underlying health conditions.

This winter it is expected that many respiratory infections, including COVID-19 and flu may be circulating at high levels – this may put increasing pressure on hospitals and other health care services. For these reasons, people aged 50 years and over, those in care homes, and those aged 12 years and over in clinical risk groups are being offered an autumn booster of COVID-19 vaccine.

A booster will also be offered to front-line health and social care staff, those who care for vulnerable individuals and families of individuals with weakened immune systems. Vaccines need to be given 3 months after the last booster.

The autumn booster is being offered to those at high risk of the complications of COVID-19 infection, who may have not been boosted for a few months. As the number of COVID-19 infections increases over the winter, this booster should help to reduce your risk of being admitted to hospital with COVID-19.

The booster may also provide some protection against mild Omicron infection but such protection does not last for long.

Opportunities in Natland to mourn the passing of Queen Elizabeth.

The Reverend Canon Angela Whittaker writes:

  • Church will remain open each day from 8am - 7.30pm in the period of mourning and there will be space to pray and messages of condolences to write if you so wish.
  • At the suggestion of Ian, the Chair of our Parish Council, and with my agreement, we are suggesting that the war memorial becomes the place to lay floral tributes if anyone would like to.  For Her Majesty, Supreme Governor of the Church of England, Head of the Armed Forces and someone who served in World War 2, this feels like a fitting place.  This does not stop anyone laying a floral tribute at the foot of the coronation tree on the Village Green if they so desire.

Changes make disabled facilities grant scheme more inclusive

News release

9 August 2022

CHANGES MAKE DISABLED FACILITIES GRANT SCHEME MORE INCLUSIVE

South Lakeland's Disabled Facilities Grants (DFG) scheme has been modified to make it even more inclusive.

The scheme helps pay for changes so people can stay living independently, with South Lakeland District Council undertaking eligible works up to a value of £30,000.

Subject to a test of financial resource, households may be asked to make a contribution but the level at which the means test will now be applied to mandatory grants has been increased from £5,000 to £10,000. Where the adaptation is for a child or young person there is no test of financial resource for the first £30,000.

SLDC's Cabinet was told that the cost of DFG work in the past six months, particularly for level-access showers, which account for about 80 per cent of DFG grants, had been exceeding £5,000.

Councillor Helen Chaffey, Portfolio Holder for Housing, said: "This is a response to increasing costs and a definite move on our part to make this worthwhile scheme which makes a real difference to people's quality of life more accessible.

"Increasing the means test threshold will cut down waiting times for applications and the start of work.”

Typical DFG adaptations are:

  • stair lifts
  • wet floor shower areas
  • access ramping.

SLDC can help with the planning and design of the work along with Cumbria Social Services and health occupational therapists.

You can apply if you are:

  • registered or registerable as disabled (your social worker or occupational therapist can tell you this) and an owner-occupier or tenant. Social housing tenants may be able to get help from their housing association to adapt their homes;
  • acting on behalf of a person with disabilities who lives in your home;
  • a landlord acting on behalf of a tenant who has disabilities.

Councillor Suzie Pye, Portfolio Holder for Health, Wellbeing and Poverty Alleviation, said: "It is vitally important that this support is there for individuals who need it and that it is as accessible as possible. This change will remove any unnecessary delays which could cause inconvenience and suffering.

"I urge anyone who feels they could benefit from this scheme to have a look on our website and find out what is available and if they are eligible for this support."

For more information on the scheme, go to: https://www.southlakeland.gov.uk/housing/housing-support-and-grants/disabled-facilities-grants/

Although it was very hot on the 18/19 July, we did not have a prolonged heatwave so monthly average temperatures were lower than last July. I live at the top of a hill and it is noticeably cooler than in the rest of the village. Even so, I recorded 32 C on the 19 July. We rarely exceed 25 C. Rainfall was nearly 4 inches, unlike the rest of the country which is having a drought. John Dobson.
