Open Gardens a great success

The weather was perfect for the Open Gardens event and around 250 people came from far and near. Just over £1,700 was raised for St. Mark's Church, and the Village Hall raised over £200 from the sale of refreshments.

Thank you to everyone who came and supported the event. Collin Mansfield

Agenda for July Parish Council published

The agenda for the July Parish Council meeting has now been published. It is up on the Parish Council noticeboard at the Post Office and also available to download as a PDF by clicking here.

If you wish to contribute to our discussions on Monday 28 July you can do so either by contacting one of your parish councillors or by attending the meeting on the night and making a statement in the ‘public participation’ section of the meeting, which councillors can then take into account during the main part of the meeting.

Can you help improve hospital discharge procedures?

If you’ve had recent experience of being discharged from any sort of health or social care setting – good or bad – Healthwatch Cumbria would be grateful for a few minutes of your time.

They have recently launched a special enquiry into unsafe discharge of patients and are hoping to be able to share those experiences across the county to improve procedures and services.

You can complete the simple survey – in complete confidence – on their website at http://healthwatchcumbria.co.uk/survey-into-unsafe-discharge.

Thanks for doing your bit to improve health services in Cumbria.

  • Further investigations will continue into the possibility of a grant for the new acoustic panels in the large hall.
  • The floor in the large hall will be cleaned and treated again by Ray, the chairman

Two new faces on the Parish Council

June’s meeting of the Parish Council welcomed two new faces to the council – Joan Lind, of Crow Park Farm on Hawes Lane, and John Bateson, of Bolefoot, Oxenholme. Joan was elected in May but unable to attend the May meeting and John was co-opted onto the council at the June meeting. The full draft minutes of the meeting are available to download here.

John was born in Oxenholme 60 years ago and christened at St Mark’s Church. His family are all local and his grandparents moved into the village in 1941. He is writing a history of Oxenholme and is a former Kendal Town Councillor and Town Mayor.

Joan, who was brought up near Inverness, is married to Henry Calvert whose family have owned Crow Park for many years. They and their two children, Tommy and Anya, moved ‘back’ to Natland from Sydney, Australia in April 2013.

We still have one vacancy on the council for anyone who lives within 3 miles of the parish boundary and would like to contribute to looking after our parish. Please contact anyone on the Parish Council page of this website to find out more.

It was the second driest June in the last ten years. The driest, in 2010, was followed by the wettest July in the period! The weather has a remarkable capacity to average out over time. It was not particularly warm due to a North/East wind which is why it was dry.     John Dobson.

Parish Footpaths

Parishioners and visitors alike enjoy the network of footpaths and bridleways throughout the civil parish of Natland. As the Parish Council’s new Footpaths Officer, my role is to help point out any defects which may occur, such as missing or broken signs, damaged stiles and overgrown or obstructed paths.

Footpath maintenance is the responsibility of the Highway Authority (Cumbria County Council, CCC) and our area contact is Tony Burns, a Countryside Ranger with CCC’s Countryside Access Team, based at Skirsgill, near Penrith. He will visit Natland from time to time.

So far, I’ve noted the badly overgrown path between Cracalt Farm and Little Cracalt, and a damaged signpost at the stile between Sedgwick Road and Helm Lane. Have any other enthusiastic walkers noticed any problems on our footpaths? If so, please contact me and I will forward the information to Tony.

Thank you

Church Magazine for July and August

The bumper end-of-term edition is crammed with so many events that some are happening on the same day. It's possible to visit the Open Gardens and if the youngsters are flagging to follow up with a Teddy Bears Picnic on the 13th July. The 1st World War Exhibition in church is followed by Afternoon Tea in the Vicarage on Sunday the 3rd of August, though the exhibition can be looked at in depth on Monday 4th to Wednesday 6th August also, 11am - 4pm. Details of these events, Church Services, and a foretaste of things to come in September are available by clicking here.
