Helm Lane to close for 3 days

 A temporary road closure has been put in place to allow Westmorland and Furness Highways to carry out highway works which are expected to commence 1st September 2026 and anticipated to take 3 days to complete.

Location: U5627 Helm Lane, Natland from its junction with the A65, extending in a north westerly direction for approx. 830m.

Alternative Route: A suitable alternative route will be signed and made available via the A65 and the U5626 Oxenholme Lane.  It has been identified that it will not be safe to maintain access for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists throughout the restriction.

N.B Passage for Emergency Vehicles will not be maintained for the duration of this restriction.

Community Conversation

The Westmorland and Furness Community Safety Partnership is launching a Community Conversation to support the development of a new Community Safety Partnership Plan for 2027-30. 

 

The Community Conversation provides an opportunity for people to offer their views and feedback on a wide range of issues and concerns. The online questionnaire asks about how safe people feel in their local community and what type of crime has the most impact on them.

 

We would also like to hear views on what concerns people the most. We want to hear from residents, workers, businesses and community groups across Westmorland and Furness.

 

Findings from the survey will then be used to plan and shape the next set of priorities that the partnership will focus on over a three-year period.

It is open from the 3rd of August to the 18th of September. Those who do not have access to the internet can visit their local Westmorland and Furness Library to complete the survey online or request a paper copy.

 

Please feel free to share this information across your organisations and communities as the more people who take part, the better we can understand local concerns and work together to make a positive difference across Westmorland and Furness.

Holiday Memories at the Women’s Institute

 On Wednesday the 15th July Rob David will be recalling what holidays were like in Lake District in the 1940s and 1950s. The meeting will be held in St. Mark’s Church Vestry as the Village Hall has building work in progress. It’s at 7.30 in the evening.

 There is a meeting of Natland Parish Council to be held at Natland Village Hall, on 22nd June 2026 at 7pm.

Follow the Galvanised Gates

A new footpath has appeared between Little Cracalt and Hawes Lane. It’s a variation of the path which is a public right of way through Cracalt Farm buildings, but now there is this new permissive path following a similar route. 

First you turn off the Sedgwick Road just beyond Appletree School. Then you turn first right up a little lane just beyond Little Cracalt. It has been newly restored by the Highways Authority and the hazardous bridge and stile have gone. Now you go through your first galvanised gate and then another one on your left. Enter the field and you can see another gate across the field, and then another across the next field. The third field you cross diagonally right towards the canal bridge where you can emerge onto Hawes Lane. You could turn left and walk along the old canal at this point too. This isn’t signposted at the moment though the route you’ve just come along is.

So it’s possible to make the route longer or just take a short circular route to and from the village now, in either direction. Either way you could reward yourself with a trip to the Dairy Shed at Cracalt Farm.

Perking up the pots on the Village Green

 You may have noticed added colour and tidiness around the benches on the Village Green.

This is down to the labours of members of the Women’s Institute, pictured here, and to the donation of bedding plants from Dan of Dan’s Plants.

St. Mark’s Church Magazine for June

Click here for the events and happenings at the Church this month. The theme of the Associate Priest’s letter is “Sauntering”, and there are opportunities offered to pause and slow down, with “A Place to Pause” set up in the Church for you to call in and enjoy as well as the 10am services every Sunday.

Please look out for aeroplane in Village Green tree

 Dear Natlanders,

While my grandchildren were visiting at half term, they took advantage of our village green to play cricket and other things. My grandson was playing with a small toy aeroplane (very light-weight as made of foam and only a few inches in size). Unfortunately it sailed into the oak tree and did not return. Although it is green and grey in colour, it could not be seen among the leaves. Perhaps it will appear in the winter or maybe it will be blown or washed down some day. . . .

If anyone finds the little plane on or near the green, please let me know or return it to 3 Abbey Drive. My grand-daughter, who gave it to her brother as a present, would be particularly grateful for its return.
