Christingles will be outside

When we made our plans for Christmas we made them thinking we could begin to do things more like we used to but unfortunately at the current time this would not be wise.  To that end we are changing the plans for the Christingle Services on Christmas Eve.

There will be two services on Christmas Eve - 2pm and 4pm.  These will now take place outside with the singing of a few carols and a reading of the Christmas story, followed by a Christingle in a bag to take home and make.

Though we don't expect everyone will want to, anyone who wishes to go into church after this short gathering outside, either on their own or with family/friends, to pray or sit a while, can do so.  Music will be playing.
Rev. Angela.

The Nativity 2021.
The First Communion of Christmas is at 11.30pm followed by a Holy Communion on Christmas Day at 9am and a Family service at 10.15am. On Boxing Day there will be Holy Communion at 10am.

New website for St. Mark’s Church

A website has just been launched with 19 sections of information about everything to do with the Church. It will replace the old page of this blog. Just click on this link or use the link to the new page on the tab above.

In the meantime St.Mark’s Church is establishing new links with  churches in the area as it becomes part of a Mission Community. This includes the churches of Old and New Hutton, Crosscrake, the United Reformed Church, the Salvation Army and Kendal Parish Church. To celebrate these links a special service is going to be held on Sunday at Kendal Parish Church at 10.30am, replacing the 10am service which is normally held here. There will be a service at 8am - Holy Communion, and a more informal service at 7pm here in Natland however.

After four dry months, the reservoirs were very low. The Water Authority were not worried as they knew we would have some wet weather and it came in October !
Apart from December 2015 (554mm) it was one of the three wettest months I have recorded. The empty reservoirs helped to prevent major flooding but now they are full so the next rain event could be a problem.

The Women’s Institute Centenary in Natland

Last Wednesday marked a 100 years ago exactly since our local W.I. had its first meeting in the Reading Room at the end of Helmside Road. Despite all the changes that have taken place over this time, the W.I has met on the third Wednesday of the month, offering its members friendship, entertainment and opportunities to learn new skills.

The event was celebrated with a toast, a fine rendition of Jerusalem and a piece of cake baked by the longest serving member, Marion Thornton, and decorated by Hilda Walker.

Here is a report of WI activities over the last few months.

Pennies put to good use

This is the picture of Jesus which was put together in the Church by David and Hilda Walker. It was made from the pennies that people have been bringing in since before the first lockdown. Thank you everyone for your contributions.

Click here for the Minutes. There won’t be a meeting in October and the next meeting will be on the 29th November. Parish elections will be in 2022.

Exploratory Holes are being dug on Home Field

Paul Want writes: It would be that Jones Homes are digging holes in Home Field, again.  I understand this is a drainage test where are dug, filled with water and then timed as to how long it takes to drain.

Would suggest the developers have read the comments about flooding, are doing further research so as to counter any objections we all have. Time to get our ducks in a row.

Work on Oxenholme Lane is finished, but…

There is a way through from the main road to the village again today(Wednesday, 15th Sept.) and Cadent will have finished all work on there by tomorrow. At the junction with the main road, the slip road is being used for storage which is presumably why the road closed signs are still there. The cabin there makes it difficult to see other cars and makes entering and exiting Oxenholme Lane dangerous.

Cadent are due to return in October to dig up in front of the church and after that up Helm Lane.

Temporary Road Closure - Oxenholme Lane

The Chair of Natland Parish Council, David Peters writes:

Some of you may have noticed the legal notice in Thursday's (1 July) Gazette about a temporary traffic regulation order on part of Oxenholme Lane to enable Cadent Gas to "carry out replacement works". Vehicles will be prohibited from using the lane between A65 Burton Road and just past the Long Meadow Lane junction "when the relevant traffic signs are displayed". The Order will commence on 19 July and is expected to be required until 21 September 2021. Pedestrians and dismounted cyclists should be allowed through at all times.

This is the first official closure of the current project. More are expected, with considerable disruption to movement. The Parish Council is asking Cadent for information about its pipe renewal programme in Natland so that the whole community can be kept informed, not just the households directly affected.

Change of date of Afternoon Tea

Due to the delay in the lifting of all Government Restriction on July 5th we  had no option other than to postpone our planned ‘ Afternoon Tea’ until Monday 19th July 3.00pm- Natland Village Green.

We had already sold 50 tickets, well above the number of 30 legally allowed for meeting outdoors as present restrictions stand. With all the interest shown to date we are hopeful that we will sell more, however we do have a limit.

I hope that this change of date does  not effect those of you who have already bought a ticket, or contacted us about reserving tickets.

If you would like a ticket please let me know.       Marley Hunter. W.I.

Christian Aid Week and Coffee Morning

The Christian Aid Coffee Morning on the Village Green last Tuesday.
A big THANK YOU to everyone who gave so generously to Christian Aid again this year. Over £1,800 has been raised so far. The weather for the coffee morning started terribly wet but by 10am the sun was out and it felt good to get together again. Maybe we felt for those people abroad suffering from the uncertain weather brought on by climate change. £513.10 was raised at the Coffee Morning.

Florence Muthiani and her grandson in Kenya. Her life has changed and her community helped by the creation of this earth dam, built as a result of Christian Aid donations from people like us.                                                          Photo credit:Christian Aid/Tom Pilston
