Natland and Oxenholme Table Tennis Club, Junior Sessions

Junior coaching and fun sessions are now up and running, on a Monday night from 6pm to 7pm in Natland Village Hall.  New junior members, boys and girls, are warmly invited to come along.  Coaching is by our two young qualified coaches, Roger Pimblett and Luke Biggins.  There are no age limits, but it tends to be best suited to ages from 8 or 9 to about 15.  The photos show some of our youngsters.

Meanwhile our adult club sessions continue on a Tuesday at 7.30pm, also in the Village Hall.  Again new members of all abilities are very welcome.

Women's Institute - Report of November Meeting

• President Marion Thornton welcomed 30 members and a new member, Stella Howes, to the Annual meeting  of Natland and Oxenholme W.I. 
• Joan Airey reported events from the recent Federation Council meeting, and a delegate  was sought  to attend the National A.G.M. in London 2012. 
• Lynne Pritchard was the successful recipient of our bi-ennial bursary towards the cost of a course of her choice at Denman College. 
• The Competition Cup was presented to Joyce Ormrod, runner up was Dorothy Goddard. 
• The Minutes Secretary and the Treasurer both submitted reports of a busy year, and after the President's address, all were thanked by Dorrie Galbraith. 
• Eleven members were nominated for committee, and after a ballot Marion was re-elected  as President.

Footpath Misuse

Why have horse riders started using – illegally – the much-valued Sedgwick road footpath? Three large quantities of horse muck have appeared in recent weeks on the path, making it practically impossible, particularly for old people, to walk along without fouling their footwear. Dog excrement is already a serious hazard here.

Indian Orphanage Directors in Natland

A taste of India arrived at Natland Village Hall last Friday when the local Trustees of a charity supporting an orphanage in Andhra Pradesh organised a Pie and Pea Supper with Rice and Curry. Ratnam and Suneetha Pallikonda are the Directors of the orphanage and they described how they look after 120 children who have been brought to their gates as well as old people in a home for the aged that they have just opened.  Click on Good Samaritan Orphanage if you would like to see more about their work.

Yellowhammer Spotted

With the weather getting a little colder now, activity round my bird feeder is quite hectic some days. I've had Treecreepers, a Nuthatch, Coal, Blue and Great Tits, Collared Doves, Woodpigeons, and all the usual locals such as Robins and Sparrows, both Hedge and House...(all very quick to disappear when the local Sparrowhawk comes calling..!!!)

Was extremely pleased this morning when, on opening the blinds saw what I first thought was an escaped Budgerigar..??!! However, on closer inspection it was a Yellowhammer..?? Now I haven't seen one of these for a long time, so wondered if anyone else had seen it locally. It flew off towards Long Meadow Lane...I've attached a picture, its not brilliant, but shooting through condensation was not easy..!!

The Coronation Scot 46201 Princess Elizabeth will be northbound on Saturday 12th November, through Oxenholme at 12-37. This is a provisional time and may be changed. She will return on Sunday the 13th November southbound through Oxenholme at 14-13.

Indian Orphanage Directors in Natland

Ratnam and Suneetha Pallikonda will be describing their work at The Good Samaritan Orphanage in Andhra Pradesh on Friday the 18th November at 7.00 in the Village Hall. It will be an illustrated talk and will include a Pie and Peas Supper for £5 per head, £2.50 for children. Please contact Elspeth Jayne in advance if you would like to come.

A Short History of the Lake District National Park by local author

This year is the 60th Anniversary of the setting up of the Lake District National Park.  To mark the occasion Jeremy Rowan Robinson of Little Lound in Natland has written a short history of the issues encountered by the National Park Authority over that time.  It is available at £2.50 from the National Park office at Murley Moss, telephone 01539 72455, or a copy can be made available from Little Lound, telephone 015395 60569.

12th Annual Craft Fair and Exhibition

This very successful event was held on Saturday, 5th November, and £960 was raised for  Village Hall funds.    A big thank you to all who visited the hall, purchased items from the stalls, bought raffle tickets and used the café. 

An exhibition was arranged in the small hall with 68 beautiful items made by local people on display. These are just a few of them.

Classes are taught by Irina Payne, a professional ballet dancer, trained and danced with the Choreography High School and the National Ballet at the Romanian National Opera in Bucharest, Romania.
Irina is an associate of the Royal Academy of Dance, has completed the Professional Dancer’s Teaching Diploma and holds the Registered Teacher Status and has taught in Egypt, Dubai and England.
Irina has an NVQ3 in Early Years and has completed Pilates Mat 1 and Mat 2 Teaching modules with Balanced Body University.

Queen's Diamond Jubilee 2012

As you will be aware the first weekend in June next year will be an opportunity to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. We are planning to organise an event on Sunday 3rd June. The intention will be to have a number of activities during the course of the afternoon. If you would like to be involved or indeed help with this event then you are invited to attend a short meeting on Thursday 17th November to be held at St. Mark's Church of England Primary School. Missing Person

Cumbria Police are trying to locate the whereabouts of Lindsay Ann Sullivan a 37 year old woman from Kendal.  Lindsey is white 5’6” tall slim build (size 6) with short dark hair and may be possibly wearing black jeans or leggings and a black top. She may also have a very large black leather handbag.

Service 552: Arnside – Kendal via Milnthorpe:

I write regarding the proposed timetable changes to the above service, which were discussed at the meeting of Natland Parish Council earlier this week.

The Council believes that efforts have been made by St Marks C of E School and other agencies to alleviate the traffic problems that have been experienced recently in the operation of this service.  Although there is presently much building work being carried out in the village, this will not last indefinitely and any problems arising from it should be short-lived.

This service is a life-line for many people in Natland, especially the elderly and those without their own transport.  It is used not only for shopping in either Kendal or Milnthorpe, but also for hospital visits, and attendance at the Helme Chase Surgery, which would not be possible if the service was severely reduced.

If the present full service cannot be maintained, then the minimum that would be acceptable to the Parish Council would be for there to be two return trips in each direction, through Natland, both on weekdays and Saturdays.  .  Although there is a morning service in the present proposals, it is essential that there is also an afternoon service provided to enable residents to return.  The proposed cancellation of the Saturday service would bring unacceptable hardship.  In addition, the Council wonders if the proposed timings are realistic to allow for buses to be negotiated along the narrow roads in this and adjacent parishes?

Natland is designated as a ‘Local Service Centre’ and, as such, there is a contract between the parish and the Principal Authority.  It should therefore not be neglected.   Natland Parish Council will continue to try to reduce congestion and address issues of concern, to enable this service to be maintained at as high a level as possible.

Natland Gardens Open Day 2012

Next year there is to be a gardens open day in Natland which is to take place on Sunday 15th July 2012. It will be six years since such an event was held in the village. The day is going to be organised jointly by St Mark’s church and the village hall committee.

We are looking for volunteers to open their gardens, however large or small, to the public. If you opened your garden last time please offer to do so again; if you did not then please volunteer this time.

Not all back gardens are appropriate to be opened in this way so we would welcome those with attractive front gardens who would be happy to have folk “stand and stare” at them and perhaps be happy to chat to visitors as they admire their handy work to also offer their gardens.

The village hall committee will be organising the sale of refreshments for the benefit of hall funds and all other money raised will go to the church.
