Everybody Needs Good Neighbours

– new initiative launched in South Lakes and Furness to help those in need

The Oaklea Trust is pleased to announce their ‘Good Neighbours’ scheme; a new initiative for people in South Lakes and Furness.  The scheme is being launched after being awarded additional funding by the Cumbria Third Sector Consortium (C3C); part of the Neighbourhood Care Independence Programme.

The ‘Good Neighbours’ programme offers a service in the community for those in need of help and support which cannot be supplied through Social and Health care.  It is aimed at those who may be vulnerable or at risk of becoming vulnerable i.e. older people, people with disabilities, single parents and young mothers, people temporarily in need through illness or anyone who may be isolated in the community.

Activities in the ‘Good Neighbours’ programme include befriending and companionship, shopping, general housework, long term home support, dog walking, gardening, driving beneficiaries to medical appointment and offering information about local sources of help.

The Project Leader for the programme is Sarah Thornborrow.  Her role is to establish and manage a team of ‘Volunteer Visitors’ and identify beneficiaries who would welcome this support.  Sarah comments,
“Oaklea Good Neighbours is a really unique project which puts people together - those who need a little helping hand and those who can regularly spare a few hours to volunteer.

There are so many things we take for granted, like making a cup of tea, tidying the garden, picking up a few groceries from the shops or just doing the laundry.  Imagine if you weren’t able to do this, through illness or incapacity, or if you were recuperating from a stay in hospital, who could you rely on?  Giving up a little time and helping could make a huge difference to someone in your local community”

Promoting Westmorland Hedge Laying

Friends of the Lake District’s thirty-sixth hedge laying competition took place at Sunny Bank Farm, Grayrigg on Saturday (22 February). Fifteen competitors laid 130 metres of hedge in the local Lancashire and Westmorland style.

Jack Ellerby from Friends of the Lake District said: ‘We have some of the best hedge layers here in south Cumbria, and you’ll see more hedge laying in our area than anywhere else in the country. A healthy, well-managed hedgerow helps manage livestock on the farm, provides valuable habitat for loads of wildlife and is an essential feature in our landscape.’

Results from the four classes were as follows:

Championship:                 1st –   Peter Gibson (Kendal)
                                            2nd –  Andrew Kirkwood (Endmoor)
                                            3rd –   Keith Allen (Staveley)

Open:                                  1st –    Jack Carradice (Selside)   – Best Overall Hedge
                                             2nd – John Gibson (Kendal)
                                             3rd –   Craig Proctor (Selside)

Novice:                                1st –    Thomas Kendal (Grayrigg)
                                             2nd –   Karl Bell (Lancaster)
            3rd –    Jon Oliver (Lancaster)

Many thanks to farmer David Galbraith for hosting and supporting the competition. David and local farmer John Handley were the judges.

St Marks Home Old Boys Information Request

I am looking for any information or photographs anyone may have of the St Mark's Home for Boys. My grandfather was a British Home Child and spent 5 years in your village at this Home from 1921 to 1926 before being sent to Canada. I have received this information from his file at the Waifs & Strays Society(formerly Church of England Society). As we are trying to piece his life together we would appreciate any insight into his life there. His name was Ernest Eaton and he would have been there when he was 10-15 years old. Thank you very much.

Microwavable Wheat Bags

Microwavable Wheat Bags

When using items such as these that absorb and store heat in this way is a potential fire risk if not used properly. For this reason it is vital to follow manufacturers’ instructions to avoid possible injury.
If a bag is kept insulated after heating - for example, under bedclothes - it may ignite.

Do
· Buy wheat bags with clear heating instructions from the manufacturer, and follow them.
· Buy bags which include a British safety standard and manufacturers’ contact details if you have a problem.
· Only use as a heat pack for direct application to the body.
· Ensure your microwave turntable is working properly.
· Watch for signs of overuse, such as a smell of burning or charring.
· Leave bags to cool in a safe area and on a non-combustible surface like a kitchen sink.

Don’t
· Use a wheat bag as a bed-warmer.
· Overheat the bag.
· Reheat the bag until it has completely cooled – which may take up to two hours.
· Leave the microwave unattended when heating.
· Store away until it has cooled.

· Use the bag if you see evidence of problems.

New online reporting for Highways launched

Cumbria County Council have just added a new online reporting option on their website. You can use it to report anything in the following broad categories: carriageway defect, flooding, footway defect, street lighting, summer maintenance, road signs, traffic signals or winter maintenance. Once you’ve reported it, you can then use the ‘fault reference number’ that it generates to go back and find out whether anything’s been done. (This is the same number you would get if you rang the Highways Hotline (0845 609 6609) so you can also use the online process to check up on something that you have already reported by phone.)

To use the system, just go to the Cumbria County Council website, click on ‘Roads and Travel’ at the top and then click on the link on the right hand side to ‘Report a NEW fault online’ or ‘Track an existing fault online’. You will need to know roughly where the defect is but the site comes with an interactive map so that you can find the exact place and drop a pin on the map to locate it. (If you are reporting a faulty streetlight, you will also have to have the three-digit number from the post.)

Would you like to help represent our parish?

The parish councillors were thrilled so see so many people turn up at the Village Hall for the launch of the Parish Plan on 1 February, despite the awful weather and the rugby on the television! And also to receive from the Parish Plan Steering Group the lists of people who have already volunteered to take part in various working groups to help push forward some of the actions in the new Plan.

But if you have a general interest in the future of our parish and would like to help to steer the whole of Parish Plan through over the next few years, why not consider standing as a parish councillor?

We are expecting to have parish council elections on Thursday 22 May this year. We currently have one vacancy, due to the resignation in January of Andrew Gill after his recent illness, and it would be great to have some new faces on board. There’s lots of training available if you’re interested (on topics like finance and planning) and no special expertise required – just a desire to look after Natland and represent our interests to other organisations.

To find out more about what the role entails, just ask one of the existing parish councillors (David Peters, Rhian Peters, Di Outhwaite, Guy Weller, Sarah Roberts or Lois Sparling) or email our parish clerk, Kevin Price, at kevtherev7@hotmail.com.

Police call for reports of door-to-door ‘probationers’

At the January Parish Council meeting, PCSO Mark Hutchinson made a special appeal for Natlanders to be on the look out for door-to-door salespeople claiming to be from a Probation Service in the North East. If someone knocks on your door you are asked to ring 101 with details, especially if you have spotted the number plate of the van which drops them off, as soon as you have (politely!) closed the front door.

These people have been trying to sell their goods in Natland recently and elsewhere in the South Lakes over the past year or so but our local police force have only just had definite confirmation that Durham, Northumberland and Cleveland Probation Service do not operate such a scheme. They never send offenders or ex-offenders into rural areas to sell their wares in this way and so we can be sure that this operation is a scam.

Natland Gardens Open Day

This year there is to be a gardens open day in the village which is to take place on Sunday 13th July. It will be two years since such an event was held. The day is going to be organised again jointly by the church and the village hall committee.

Volunteers are needed to open their gardens, however large or small, to the public. Many of the garden owners who opened their gardens last time have offered to do so again and we thank them for this. If you would be willing to open your garden this time or know someone who might agree then please let us know.

Not all back gardens are appropriate to be opened in this way so we would welcome those with attractive front gardens who would be happy to have folk admire their handy work to also offer their gardens.

The village hall committee will be organising the sale of refreshments for the benefit of hall funds and all other money raised will go to the church. In 2012 the event raised over £1,000 for church funds despite the afternoon being (like the rest of the summer) damp and cool.

If you are willing to offer your garden or want any more information please contact or speak with Collin Mansfield at collin4mansfield@homecall.co.uk or 07740 447858 or to any of the organising committee, Audrey Ireland, Rhian Peters, David Walker or Jennifer Ball.

The Plan for Natland

The Parish 2014 Action Plan, which has been developed over the past year through consultation with parish residents, was presented today at a gathering in the Village Hall. The Chair of the Steering Group which had worked so hard to respond to residents' feedback and create a feasible way forward for the parish was Marisa Wray, shown here with the Chair of the Parish Council, David Peters.

A Summary of their findings is being distributed to everyone in the parish. You can also download a Full Report which has no photos so is a bit quicker to load.

It is hoped that this website will in future be able to help match volunteers with volunteer opportunites, but if you would like to sign up for one of the working groups - on Traffic & Footpaths, Community Energy, Broadband, (designing an) Interpretative Panel - or just to help out with parish maintenance - please email parish councillor Lois Sparling.
